Honoring Araw ng Kagitingan: A Tribute to Bravery and Sacrifice

Every year on April 9, the country takes a moment to reflect on Araw ng Kagitingan, also known as the Day of Valor, a pivotal event in our history.
More than just a holiday, it’s a day to remember the incredible bravery of American and Filipino soldiers who defended their positions during World War II, particularly those who fought—and lost their lives—in Bataan. This day takes us back to a time of unimaginable hardship, pain, and ultimate sacrifice.

The Bataan Death March and the Fall of Bataan

After months of relentless fighting, a decision was made. On April 9, 1942, around 76,000 Filipino, American, and other allied soldiers, who had fought to protect the Bataan Peninsula from the advancing Japanese forces, were ordered to surrender. It was a hard blow to their spirits, but at that moment, it also meant an end to the continuous violence they had been enduring.

However, what came next was far worse. Instead of a safe haven, the soldiers were subjected to the infamous Bataan Death March. They were forced to have a 150 kilometer walk from Bataan to San Fernando, in the brutal heat of the sun. With little food, no water, and suffering from exhaustion, many soldiers collapsed and died along the way. Those who survived faced even more suffering in prison camps, enduring malnutrition, disease, and inhumane conditions.

Yet, despite the unimaginable brutality, the courage shown by these soldiers became a symbol of resilience. Their struggle, their endurance, and their sacrifice are still remembered today as a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

To make sure that we never forget the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought during this time, Araw ng Kagitingan was declared a national holiday. Republic Act 3022, which established the holiday, was a promise to always remember the valor of those who defended the country, not just in Bataan, but in other significant battles throughout the nation.

This day serves as a reminder to reflect on the courage and determination shown by the soldiers, and to acknowledge that the freedoms we have today are a direct result of their sacrifice. Araw ng Kagitingan is more than a day of remembrance—it is a time to honor the past and reflect on how we continue to move forward because of the strength and bravery of those who fought for our country.

We observe Araw ng Kagitingan with solemn ceremonies today, especially at Mount Samat in Bataan, where a towering shrine honors our heroes. Leaders of the government, veterans, their families, and regular Filipinos gather to pay their respects.

But Araw ng Kagitingan is not just about speeches and wreaths. It’s about preserving the spirit of those heroes in our daily lives. It’s about living with bravery, helping others, and showing love for our country. The best tribute to their courage is by living with the same dedication and commitment in our own lives.

At Jill L. Tolentino Customs Brokerage, Araw ng Kagitingan holds profound meaning. While we were not on the front lines of battle, we strive to live by the same values of dedication, honor, and service that our heroes showed during the war. Their bravery in the face of adversity is a reminder that every act of service, no matter how small, can contribute to the greater good of our nation.

As a business founded on integrity, honesty, and patriotism, we recognize that the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today were made possible by the sacrifices of our forebears. It is our duty to honor their legacy by providing compassionate service and working diligently to contribute to our country’s continued progress.

Today, we remember not just the past, but also the individuals whose sacrifices allow us to live in freedom. We extend our sincere gratitude to our heroes, and we remind every Filipino that bravery doesn’t just live in monuments—it lives in how we lead, care for, and serve one another every single day.
